[Also in Group XXV] Frames; stands; work-supports.-In order that a machine which can be swung down beneath the top of its table can be used with a free work-arm or a flat work support at the same level, the arm is carried between two members lying parallel to it, one hinged to the table and the other adapted to rest on a movable part of the table, the top of the arm being level with the table in the working position and a bridging piece or pieces being provided to cover the space between the arm and the table when desired. In the form shown, the standard 3 of the machine is based on a broad bed-plate 2 from which the free work-arm 7 extends, and is secured to a rectangular open frame 9 provided with a supporting ledge for the bed-plate and detachably secured at one side to hinge arms 13 carried by members 16 in recesses on the underside of the table-top 17; at the opposite side to the hinges the frame 9 has a flange resting on a rubber bearing strip 19 on a ledge 20 which is hinged to the table-top at 21 so that it can be lifted to enlarge the aperture in the table-top for the machine to be swung down through this aperture. When a continuous work-support is required, plates 24 hinged to the frame 9 are swung over to rest against the arm 7; these plates are shaped to fit round the end of the arm and may be alternatively hinged to the table-top 17 and ledge 20 or pivoted about vertical axes at the corners of the bed-plate 2. In a modification, the plates 24 are replaced by a single flat member fitting round the arm 7 and slidable on the frame so that it can be moved to the left to allow access to the lower stitch-forming devices or slightly to the right to clear the end of the aperture in the table-top when the machine is to be stowed; the plate may carry securing elements which engage under the edges of the bed-plate 2, and is removed altogether when a free work-arm is required. The frame 9 may be open-ended, and may be integral with the bed-plate, in which case it may be reduced to a pair of members, or a member on the hinged side only, extending parallel to the machine arm.
