Abstract

674,577. Paper and felt containing synthetic filaments. AMERICAN VISCOSE CORPORATION. July 24, 1950 [Feb. 9, 1950; Feb. 9, 1950], No. 18424/50. Class 96. Paper or water-laid felt &c. is made from a suspension of synthetic filaments, e.g. of regenerated cellulose, cellulose acetate, casein, linear polyamides or polyesters, vinyl chloridevinylidene chloride, polyethylene, polyacrylonitrile or co-polymers with vinyl acetate, vinyl chloride, styrene, isobutylene or vinyl α- chloracetate, of length <SP>1</SP>/ 32 to 1 inch and 0 to 90 per cent of natural fibres, e.g. of wood pulp, to which suspension has been added a waterinsoluble, alkali-soluble cellulose ether, e.g. an alkyl, a carboxyalkyl, hydroxyalkyl, or mixed ether or an alkali metal salt of a carboxyalkyl ether to be precipitated, e.g. by dilution or by acid or an acidic salt, into a fine particulate condition and to act as a dispersing agent for the fibres in the pulp and as a binder for the felted product. Such products may be strong and wet-strong paper for tea-bags, towelling, wrappings, paper bags, boxboard, wall-board, insulation, gas-mask filters, absorbent pads, surgical tampons, multiple - ply products, moulded shaped articles, &c. and may be resistant to acids, bacteria and moulds, and may be coated with melamine-formaldehyde resin to form highly transparent overlays, e.g. for table tops, or coated with polyvinyl butyral or may be combined with woven gauze. The acidic precipitant, e.g. sulphuric acid may be applied to the partly-dried, felted product.
