Abstract

574,575. Agglutinated fibrous materials. WOODMAN, T. C. Aug. 25, 1943, No. 13593/42. [Class 140] [Also in Groups IX and XXV] A resilient article for use in place of rubber is made by dipping a shaped body of fibres matted together to an average density of 0.2-0.4 grams per c.c. in a dope containing a flexible film-forming material other than cellulose acetate, removing the body when it contains 10-25 per cent. of film forming material based on the weight of the fibres and while the penetration of the dope is still incomplete, and drying without subjecting to heat and pressure. The film forming material may form a skin on the surface of the body and leave the centre or core unimpregnated. The impregnation may be effected in a chamber which is evacuated before the dope is run in and later subjected to pressure to force the dope into the body. The dried impregnated body may be re-dipped once or oftener. The shaped body may comprise animal fibres, e.g., wool, artificial filaments or fibres, or both. The dope may be a solution in a volatile solvent of a cellulose derivative, e.g., cellulose propionate, butyrate, acetate-propionate, acetatebutyrate, acetate-stearate, ethyl, benzyl, or hexyl cellulose, polyvinyl compounds, e.g., polyvinyl acetate, a copolymer of vinyl chloride and acetate, or a polyacrylic ester or an aqueous suspension or latex containing plasticized ethyl cellulose, polvinyl chloride, poly-vinylidene chloride, polyisobutylene, polymers of butadiene or chloroprene alone or together with styrene, acrylonitrilo, or isobutylene. or rubber and its derivatives. A plasticizer, e.g., castor oil or tricresyl phosphate may be added. Dyes, pigments, abrasive materials, solid lubricants, e.g., graphite or talc, or fire retardants may be added to the dope or incorporated in the fibrous body before impregnating. The products are suitable for shock-, vibration-, or pressure-absorbing stops, buffers, or mountings, e.g., door stops, buffer pads for water closet seats, buffers in textile looms to check the motion of the picking sticks or as the shock absorbing pads mounted on frogs at either side of the loom, or as coverings for the cloth-engaging parts of the loom temples, in which case the continuous outer skin may be skimmed off to give better friction. Specificaton 574,605 is referred to.
