Abstract
674,556. Change-speed gearing. JUY, L. C. H. June 16, 1950 [Nov. 22, 1949], No. 15115/50. Class 80 (ii). In change-speed gearing for bicycles comprising an externally - threaded sleeve 2 axially adjusted in its carrying bracket 6 and a coil spring 1 acting both in compression and in torsion, the torsion of the spring is varied by engaging its end 8 in one or other of a number of peripheral notches 11 in a cup-shaped member 9 which is held against rotation relative to the bracket 6. As shown in Fig. 1, the sleeve 2 is adjustably threaded in the bracket 6 and locked by a nut 7, the adjustment being effected by turning a washer 3 engaging flats on the sleeve 2 so that the latter turns with the washer 3 but is slidable therein. The member 9 is pressed against the bracket 6 by the spring 1 and is held against rotation by a pin 10. As shown in Fig. 4, flats on the sleeve 2 prevent its rotation in the bracket 6 and axial adjustment is effected by a pair of nuts 14, 15, the member 9, which also engages the flats on the sleeve 2, being pressed against' the nut 15 by the spring 1.
