Abstract

624,248. Timing ignition. LUCAS, Ltd., J., and WHITEHOUSE, H. E. June 20, 1947, No. 16321. [Class 7 (iv)] [Also in Group XXXVII] An interrupter comprises a pair of coaxially arranged hollow body parts one of which has mounted within it interrupter mechanism adapted to be actuated by a rotary cam and is rotatably adjustable relatively to the other for varying the timing by moving the mechanism relatively to the cam and means whereby the body parts are adjustably interconnected this means being manually operable for effecting relative rotational adjustment of the parts. As shown a body part 2 carrying a cap 3 is rotatable with respect to a body part 1. The parts are held together by screws 6 which co-operate with slots in the part 1. The interrupter contact arm and fixed contact are carried on a plate 13 integral with or carried by the body part 2. The interrupter cam is mounted on a shaft carried in a bearing 9 of the body part 1. For providing for rotating the body part 2 relatively to the body part 1 a boss 18 is formed on the part 2 and carries a spindle 19 having a head 20 and threaded portion 22. On the threaded portion of the spindle is a nut 23 which carries a portion 24 engaging a recess 25 in the part 1. A serrated washer 27 is held by a spring 26 against a complementary portion of the head 20. If desired a pointer may be secured to the body part 1 and arranged to move over a graduated scale on the body part 2. In a modification the rotatable stem may have a thread or helical part directly engaging a part of the body 1 or alternatively a rotatable and axially movable screw may be arranged in screw thread engagement with a boss on one of the body parts and connected at one end to a projection on the other body part. More than one contact arm may be employed. The Provisional Specification describes also a device which effects adjustment of the plate supporting the contact arm or arms in response to variation of induction pipe pressure. The device conveniently comprises a chamber containing a spring loaded diaphragm and is carried by the body part carrying the cap.
