Abstract

603,650. Actuation of switches. FRANCIS, A., GODDEN, C. S., and COLEY ELECTRICAL INSTRUMENTS, Ltd. Oct. 26, 1945, No. 28288. [Class 38 (v)] [Also in Group XIX] A Bourdon gauge type of pressure-operated instrument comprises a pair of electrical switch contacts of which one contact is secured directly to the Bourdon tube and the other contact is mounted for adjustment by a control member which is operatively coupled to this second contact. A flat plate 28, Fig. 1, forms one contact of the switch and is mounted on a resilient arm 29, which is secured to the free end of the Bourdon tube 13 by an electrically insulating glue or, if the tube is suitably insulated, the arm 29 may be brazed thereto. The second contact 32 is of domed form and is adjustably mounted in a support 33 carried by an arcuate spring 34, the other end of which is secured to an insulated support mounted on an arcuate lever 36. The support 33 abuts against an insulating block 38 carried by the lever 36 which has a pivotal mounting 37 and may be moved to adjust the domed contact 32 by rotating a spindle 44 connected to the end of the lever 36 by a pin-and-slot mechanism. The spindle 44 carries a knob and pointer with which is associated a setting scale (not shown) which is separate from the main scale of the instrument, the latter being associated with a pointer on a spindle 19 driven by the end of the Bourdon tube through a toothed quadrant mechanism. In a modification, Fig. 3, the contact 32 is secured to a slidable mounting 58 which is loaded by a light spring and carried on an insulated base 54 having a pivot 37, adjustment being effected by a system of levers interconnected by pin-and-slot mechanisms. The gauge may be used to effect a control of the pressure or temperature which it indicates.
