Abstract
673,112. Coke ovens. WOODALL-DUCKHAM VERTICAL RETORT & OVEN CONSTRUCTION CO. (1920), Ltd.,.and TAYLOR, A. Sept. 27, 1950 [Sept. 30, 1949], No: 25193/49. Class 51 (ii). In a compound indirectly heated retort or oven, particularly a compound coke oven battery of the CoppÚe type, even distribution of heat in the heating flues when fired either by rich gas, e.g. coke oven gas or by poor gas, e.g. blast furnace gas is enhanced by, in each heating flue, constructing or surfacing the wall remote from the burner with a material having a heat absorption capacity greater than that of the material used for the heating flue wall near to the burner when a luminous flame or rich gas flame is used. A suitable combination is obtained by constructing or surfacing the remote sections of the flues of chrome magnesite or surfacing them with Siemens-Martin slag and constructing the sections near the burners of silica. Using the chrome magnesite-silica combination, the ratio between the wall areas is 1 : 1 and between the wall thicknesses 4 : 5 respectively. Alternatively, the remote sections of each flue may be made of silica and the sections near the burner of a substance having opposite absorption characteristics with respect to both luminous and non-luminous flames to those of chrome magnesite and Siemens- Martin slag.
