Abstract

672,794. Cathode-ray tubes. CINEMATELEVISION, Ltd., and FREEMAN, G. S. P. June 26, 1950 [June 29, 1949], No. 17177/49. Class 39 (i). A circuit arrangement comprises a television pick-up tube including a photo-cathode 1 and a storage electrode on which the photo-electrons are arranged to impinge and which is in the form of a double.sided target 2 arranged to be scanned on one side by an electron beam, the other side of the target being covered with a thin insulating layer 3 and a thin conducting layer 4, means being provided for maintaining the conducting layer 4 at a potential different from the potential at which the double sided target 2 is stabilized by the scanning beam. In operation the photo-electrons penetrate the conducting layer 4, which may be of aluminium or beryllium, and the insulating layer 3, which may be of silica or magnesium fluoride, and are brought to rest in the target 2 which may be of glass. The bombardment-induced conductivity allows a current to flow between the target 2 and the conducting layer 4 charging the target positive or negative according to the potential of the layer 4; the potential of the layer 4 may be varied to form a gain control. The target 2 may be scanned by a high velocity beam or a low velocity beam, and the output may be derived from the layer 4 or from the returning electrons of the scanning beam. Specifications 597,532 and 655,290 are referred to. Specification 655,291 also is referred to in the Provisional Specification.
