Abstract
672,599. Expanding-wheel gear. SEMET & CO., Ltd., M. and MERCIER, R. M. Oct. 3, 1950, No. 24170/50. Class 80 (ii). An extensible pulley for a plurality of V-belts of the type comprising several pairs of pulley cheeks rotating with the shaft, one of eachpair being axially movable of the shaft and the others axially immovable, is characterized in that the axially movable cheek members are rigidly interconnected and one of them has a hub which is keyed to the shaft by balls riding in opposing keyways cut in the hub and in the shaft. As shown, the axially immovable cheeks 21, 21', 21<SP>2</SP> are clamped by a number of bolts 17, of which only one is shown, and distance pieces 18, 19, 20 to a pair of discs 16, 16', each keyed to the shaft 15. The movable cheeks 27, 27<SP>1</SP>, 27<SP>2</SP> have clearance holes for the passage therethrough of the distance pieces 18, 19, 20. The movable cheeks are similarly clamped by a number of bolts 23, of which only one is shown, and distance pieces 24, 25, 26 to a pair of end members 22, 22' which are slidably mounted on the shaft 15 by a number of rows of balls, each riding in opposing keyways cut in the hubs 28 of the end members 22, 21' and in the shaft 15, respectively. A bellows 35 may be arranged as shown to exclude dirt from the balls and to prevent lubricant therefrom being thrown on to the operative faces of the pulleys.
