Abstract

A material for destroying nematoid worms on seeds, bulbs &c consists of a mixture containing 55-75 per cent of ortho-and para-monochlorophenol and 25-45 per cent of 2 : 4-dichlorophenol, and is made by treating phenol with chlorine at a temperature of 60-140 DEG C until a specific gravity of 64-71 DEG Tw. at 20 DEG C is obtained. The product may be washed with water of which it absorbs about 10 per cent. A small amount of an anionic wetting-agent may be added; suitable agents are sodium di-octyl sulphosuccinate, salts of alkyl sulphuric acids derived from primary and secondary alcohols with 12 or more carbon atoms, and salts of aromatic sulphonic acids. The preparation may be diluted for use with 400 times its weight of water.
