In a settee or chair of the kind in which the back is capable of being swung down into horizontal position in alignment with the seat the back rest is hinged to the seat portion and is fitted with a catch over which is movable a spring-controlled latch member hinged to the seat frame to co-act with the catch to retain the back rest in upright position, releasing means being provided for the latch to facilitate lowering of the back rest. The back rest 1 is hinged to the seat frame 3 at 2 and is provided with two pairs of spaced parallel angle bars 4 on which are mounted cam catch plates 6. Latch members comprising stems 7 and cross pieces 10 are mounted on a rod 8 pivotally mounted on the seat frame offset to the hinges 2 so that when the back rest 1 is raised to upright position the cross pieces 10 ride along the bars 4 and engage the underside of the catch plates 6 so retaining the back rest in upright position. Releasing means operable by a pedal is provided. As shown, one arm rest 18 is pivoted to the seat frame so that it may provide a head rest for the bed while the other arm rest 19 is detachable from slots 28 at the other end of the seat frame and adapted, by spigots 27, to be positioned alongside the arm rest 18 to provide a head rest in alignment with the lowered arm rest. A leg or legs 5 are hinged to the rails 4 and are automatically brought into operative position to support the back rest in bed position by means of a push rod engageable with the seat frame, a spring being provided to move the leg 5 into inoperative position when the back rest is raised.
