An easy chair or seat convertible into a chaise longue or bed comprises a rigid base 10, 11, 12, or frame of shallow box form, an upholstered back unit 13 hinged to the rear part of the base, an upper seat 19 hinged at its rear end to the back unit 13 and supported at its front end by the base, e.g. by lugs 20 and a lower seat unit 21 hinged to the front end of the upper seat unit and adapted to fold under that unit within the base or to be swung out to form a forward extension of the upper seat unit. The seat units may be wedge-shaped. As shown in Fig. 6, a transverse spindle 14 passes through brackets 15 fixed to the sides of back unit 13 and is fixed to the side walls of the base. Each bracket has a lug 16 to which a plate 18 fixed to the side of the upper seat unit, is pivoted (Fig. 7). Movement of the back unit will therefore cause corresponding movement of the upper seat unit since it is free to move longitudinally on lugs 20 along the side walls 10. The back unit 13 is angularly adjusted by raising the trigger 32 which, through a link 31 and lever 30, rotates a sleeve carried on spindle 14, which causes the arm 26 and lever 27 to lower a rod 24, guided in slots 25 in brackets 15, out of engagement with toothed sectors 23 fixed to the base and concentric about the spindle 14. On release of the trigger 32, a spring 34 biases the rod 24 into the locking position. Fabric 33 over the rear surface of the back unit conceals all the mechanism except the trigger 32. For conversion into a bed, the lower seat unit is swung out to rest in a horizontal position on a hinged strut 37, foldable into the seat unit and the back unit rests horizontally on arm rests 36, pivoted on the ends of a rod 35 and swung down to act as struts, the upper seat unit resting on lugs 20. For support of the back unit, struts may be used and in this case the arms 36 are used for locating a pillow against lateral displacement. According to the Provisional Specification, the back unit may be detachable from the frame or foldable forwardly on to the upper seat unit. Also the lower seat unit may be hinged to the front edge of the base instead of to the upper seat unit.
