672,469. Copy - turning ; face - plates. GEIGER, R., (trading as GEIGER MASCHINENFABRIK, A.). June 6, 1950 [Jan. 7, 1950], No. 14111/50. Class 83 (iii). A lathe for turning oval work in which a face-plate driven by the lathe spindle carries a work-holding slide which is moved by an adjustable eccentric guide-ring, is characterized in that counterweights on the face-plate are coupled to the slide to move oppositely thereto and balance the weight thereof. The face-plate 1 has a threaded boss B secured to the lathe spindle S, Fig. 2. A slide 4 with a work-holding member 5 moves along guides 2, 3, forming part of an aperture 7 in the face-plate. A guide-ring 8 is adjustably secured to the lathe frame, with its axis at the same level as the spindle axis but eccentrically spaced thereto. An intermediate member 9 surrounds the ring 8 and vertical side faces thereon engage similar guide surfaces provided on side extensions 6 of the slide. When the face-plate rotates the work-holder is thus constrained to move in an oval path. Teeth are provided on the outside edges of the slide 4, Fig. 1, to engage pinions 13, 14, which in turn engage teeth on the sides of balance-weights 11, 12. Extra weights 16, 17 may be secured to the balance weights which slide along apertures in the face-plate. Springs 18 connect the balance-weights to the slide 4 to cushion the effect thereof. A lever system may be provided in lieu of the gears to connect the slide and balance-weights.
