Abstract
672,425. Suction dredging. DUPONT, E. April 21, 1950. [Jan. 6, 1950] No. 9838/50. Class 68 (i). [Also in Groups XXVIII and XXIX] Apparatus for raising liquids or for dredging purposes in which the liquid suspension does not pass through the centrifugal pumps, comprises a reservoir 1 that is alternatively subjected to vacuum and atmospheric pressure. When the reservoir is subjected to vacuum the valve 3 opens and suspension passes into the reservoir from the suction pipe 2. As the level in the reservoir rises a float 7 in a tube 6 rises until at a certain level a cam 9 on the float rod 8 moves a lever-controlled valve 12 to connect pipe 14 with a pipe 18 that is connected to a vacuum reservoir 19 which is in communication with a centrifugal exhaust pump. The pipe 14 is connected to a cylinder 16 and the piston 17 moves to operate a valve 21 to interrupt communication between reservoir 14 and reservoir 1 and to vent reservoir 1 to atmosphere so that valve 5 opens and the contents of the reservoir 1 are discharged. As the float 7 falls on this discharge, the valve 12 is moved by cam 10 to connect pipes 15 and 18 so as to reverse the movement of piston 17 and valve 21 so that the cycle of operations can be repeated.
