Abstract

1,195,361. Rotary vacuum - pumps. N.G.N. Ltd. June 21, 1967 [March 28, 1966], No. 13595/66. Heading F1F. A rotary vacuum-pump 12 immersed in oil has suction pipes 22, 24 connected by a cylinder 20 for a spring-loaded spool-valve-member with a piston 26. When the pump is not operating the valve member abuts a stop 42 and the piston has to the right of a sealing ring 40 in engagement with another sealing ring 38 so as to first shut off the pipe 24 and then admit air above the oil to the pipe 22 through a small vent 34, thus preventing the oil entering the pump and the pipe 24. When pump is in operation an anxiliary vacuum pump 16 partially exhausts a space 21 to shift the valve member to the position shown. Alternatively, the piston may be controlled by either a solenoid energized directly or indirectly by a generator, Fig. 2 (not shown), or a centrifugal governor, Fig. 3 (not shown). As another alternative, the piston 26 is replaced by a piston 64 engaging with a fixed piston 70 with a hollow stem 71 connected to a hydraulic pump 60. When the pump 12 is inoperative air enters the pipe 22 through ports 74, 76, the piston 64 being shifted to the left by hydraulic pressure when the pump is operating. A vent 76 relieves pressure in the stem when the piston moves to the right. To prevent the piston 26 oscillating, the ring 40 may be replaced by two rings with an air vent there between, Fig. 5 (not shown).
