Abstract

671,845. Pianofortes. ROOPE, J. W. T. Sept. 14, 1950. [Sept. 15, 1949] No. 23805/49. Class 88 (ii)., A pianoforte or violin is provided with electrical amplifying equipment so that when muted, it can still be heard by a player wearing headphones. In a pianoforte, the mute comprises a graduated strip of felt 2 which can be inserted between the hammers and the strings. The strip is mounted on a wooden rail 1 controlled by a lever under the key bed. The rail also carries a metal strip 5 which together with the piano strings forms an electrostatic generator. The generator is connected through an amplifier to a socket into which the headphones are plugged. Alternatively, the strip 5 may be supported by but electrically insulated from the iron frame of a piano. A microphone fitted to the soundboard may take the place of the electrostatic generator. A violin is muted by means of a piece of sponge rubber under the feet of the bridge. A crystal microphone is attached to the bridge.
