Abstract

202,756. Compton, J. H. May 31, 1922. Stringed instruments, sound - magnifying attachments for; strings. -To produce or increase reverberation effects when musical instruments are played in buildings or out-ofdoors,a vibrant medium is arranged so as to vibrate sympathetically under the air vibrations produced by the instrument, the medium being connected with intensifying means producing sound-waves of the desired intensity. The Figure shows a vibrant medium consisting of strings b<1> on a soundboard b connected to a microphone a which is in circuit with a battery d and the primary coil e of a transformer, the secondary coil f being connected to a loud-speaking telephone g. The intensifier may alternatively be operated pneumatically through a grid-valve, or may comprise relays of thermionic valves, and its effect may be regulated by a slide in the horn, or by adjusting the voltage or pneumatic pressure.. The duration of the induced resonance may be limited and adjusted by covering the wires with elastic varnish, rubber or thin copper wire, or by damping with felt at one or both ends. The vibrator may be placed on a non-resonant part within an organ, with a number of intensifiers at a distance in the building.
