Abstract
393,612. Electrical musical instruments. SIEMENS & HALSKE AKT.-GES., Siemensstadt, Berlin.-(Assignees of Nernst, W.; 16, Neue Wilhelmstrasse, Berlin.) Dec. 1, 1931, No. 33335. Convention date, Dec. 1, 1930. [Class 88 (ii).] To enrich the harmonics, particularly at the centre of the compass of an instrument wherein the mechanical vibrations of strings are directly picked up and converted into electric oscillations which are conducted through an amplifier to a loud-speaker, the microphone (electromagnetic or electrostatic &c.) is placed close to the end of a string as at A, Fig. 1. Further harmonics of the 2n, 4n, 6n ..series may be added by securing the string to an elastic magnetic holder H and placing a second microphone, or the other pole B of a bi-polar microphone, close to the holder. Where the instrument has no soundboard, damping means (additional to the usual dampers 13, Fig. 2), may be provided to produce an effect on the tone character similar to that produced by a soundboard, which damps the harmonics and fundamental unequally. The damping means may consist of porous material 11 (felt, wadding, flannel, cork, &c.), applied at a suitable part of the string to produce the tone of a grand piano. Harmonium tone is restored by removing the damping means 11 pivoted at 10, by means of a lever 1, sliding wedge 2, pivoted wedge 6 and connection 8. The distances of the magnet from the end of the string, or from the string itself, or from the holder, may be adjustable. Single pole magnets are preferably used. To further weaken the fundamental, especially for lower notes, a self inductance may be placed in shunt to the magnet. Specification 354,301 is referred to. The Specification as open to inspection under Sect. 91 contains references to springs for adjusting the pressure of the damping means, and to photo-electric transmission means. These references do not appear in the Specification as. accepted.
