[Class 88 (ii).] The strings of pianofortes or like instruments i n which the vibrations are transformed into electrical currents for transmission to loud - speakers o r the like, are struck lightly by auxiliary hammers of small mass carried by the main hammers. The main hammers H, Fig. 1, N, Fig. 2a, are operated in the usual way, but are arrested by a stop A, so that only the auxiliary hammers such as the sliding piece E, or the suspended piece M, strike the strings S. The strings may be made thinner and only one provided for each note, and the tensioning devices may be simplified. The piece M may be of felt with or without a wooden filling. In Fig. 4b the suspended auxiliary hammer consists of cork &c. R with metal clamps T at the ends, and acts with an effectiveness varying with the player's touch. In Fig. 5 (not shown) a cork striking pad is secured on a leather strip'stretched over a V-shaped metal piece containing felt. In Fig. 6 (not shown) a second, smaller, auxiliary hammer is suspended in front of the first auxiliary hammer, the latter being spring-mounted on the main hammer and only coming into action with a powerful stroke.
