Abstract

462,371. Stringed musical instruments. FAURE, A. J. May 29, 1935, No. 15654. Void. Convention date, May 30, 1934. [Class 88 (ii)] Heavy flexible strings are used on instruments with electrical (loud-speaker) amplification, consisting of thick wire 2, e.g. of tungsten, loosely wound on a fine and lightly stretched core 1 of catgut. More than one layer of wire may be used, of differing diameters, the thickest at the exterior. The turns of the wire are arranged closer together at the bowing point, and only one layer is used at the bridge and nut. The instrument, e.g. violin, is tuned to a two-octave or other interval below normal register, thus altering its tone. The vibrations, the direct sonority of which is poor, are transmitted by a pick-up comprising two permanent horseshoe magnets 5 spacedly secured on each face of the bridge, at the non-vibrating point 3 thereof, by a bolt and nut. A soft iron blade 9 secured to the bridge projects between the poles of each magnet (being separated therefrom by rubber discs 10) and into coils 11 set within the pairs of poles. The coils are in series or in parallel.
