Abstract

991,199. Electrical stringed instruments. ORMSTON BURNS Ltd. April 17, 1964 [April 25, 1963], No. 16256/63. Heading G5J. A contact pick-up unit for stringed musical instruments comprises a resiliently mounted magnetic armature 61 (Fig. 6) which is connected to a damping contact member 72 engaging a string 73 (Fig. 3) of the instrument and movable with respect to a core structure 51 (Fig. 6) so that movement of the armature corresponding to vibrations of the string produces corresponding signals in a coil 59 mounted on the core structure. Several coils may be mounted on the core structure in which case signals are induced in them by vibrations in the armature. Each string of the instrument which is connected via its associated contact member to its associated armature may be of gut, steel or nylon or may be of composite material e.g. steel surrounded by nylon. The core structure may consist of two pairs of permanent magnets 57, 58 between magnetic members 52, 56, 51 and each magnetic armature 61 may be secured to and separated from the core by a resilient P.V.C .layer 60. Each armature 61 may be connected to its corresponding adjustable damping contact 72 which may be a pad of felt, foamed plastic or rubber by a non-magnetic rod 63 passing through a bushed hole 64 in a mounting plate 30 and by a strip 68 which supports the contact and is adjustably secured to the mounting plate. A tremulant device if provided and a grooved adjustable bridge 36 attached adjacent the mounting plate 30 on the instrument may be screwed to an end plate 32 to which one end of each string is fixed. A conventional electro magnetic pick up 80 (Fig. 3) which may also be encorporated on the mounting plate 30 may be used in addition to the contact pick-up if steel strings are employed on the instrument. The instrument may be a guitar, or it may be either a violin or cells in which case frets need not be provided on the fingerboard which may be flat or curved in cross-section.
