[Class 88 (ii)] The key 1 operates on the hammer-butt 7 or stem 5<1> either directly, Fig. 1, or through only a single lever 29, Fig. 5, and the striking-member rigidly carries an adjustable auxiliary check 13, which latter, in the check position shown, co-operates with an adjustable headed striking screw 10, to clamp the hammer firmly at two points on opposite sides of its pivot 27, with a force depending on the pressure applied to the key. The striking is performed in consequence of the elasticity in the hammer butt and stem, in the cushions 21, 13 and in the striking- member 3, Fig. 1, or 29, Fig. 5, which latter may be of metal and be resilient. In Fig. 1, the striking-member 3 is constituted by a downward or upward bend 3 of the key, and the hammer-butt 7 has a forked part 9, loosely surrounding and retaining the striking-screw 10. The struck surface 21 of the hammer-butt is rounded to produce rolling contact with the rounded head of the screw 10. In the grand piano shown in Fig. 5, the key 1 acts on the striking-lever 29 through a screw 23, and the striking-screw acts on the hammer-stem 51 through a deerskin roller 21<1>. The arrangement reduces the size of grand or upright pianos.
