Abstract

Esters of 2 : 4-dichlorphenoxyacetic acid in which the ester group is a chlorphenyl-monoether of propylene glycol are obtained by reacting 1 mol. of the acid and at least 1 mol. of the glycol ether in presence of a dehydration catalyst, such as sulphuric acid, if desired in a water-immiscible solvent heated to boiling. The glycol ethers employed may be obtained by the reaction of propylene oxide and a chlorophenol in presence of sodium hydroxide, when a 1-chlorophenoxy-2-propanol is mainly obtained. In examples, 2 : 4 - dichlorphenoxyacetic acid is condensed with 1-(2-chlorophenoxy) - 2 - propanol, 1 - (2 : 4 - dichlorophenoxy) - 2 - propanol, 1 - (2 : 4 : 6 - trichlorophenoxy) - 2 - propanol, and 1 - (2 : 4 : 5 - trichlorophenoxy) - 2 - propanol to give the corresponding esters.
