671,119. Firing mechanism; non explosive projectiles. WOLF, A. April 21, 1949. [May 21, 1948] No. 10650/49. Classes 9 (i) and 119. [Also in Groups XXII and XXV] In an apparatus for sinking bolts into compact material such as masonry, iron plates, etc. comprising a barrel 1 from which a bolt can be discharged under the action of an explosive charge, the discharge end of the barrel is provided with means by which a supporting plate 15 can be removably secured so that it can be engaged by the head of the bolt as it emerges from the barrel, thereby to limit the penetration of the bolt, but can be disengaged from the barrel after the stroke of the bolt has been completed. The supporting plate may be positioned in front of the muzzle by means of pins 16, or it may be supported in an adaptor 22 or in a recess 48 in the barrel, Fig. 3. The barrel is provided with a shoulder 3 against which a flange 6 of a bolt having a guide surface 5 rests, a drum 7 having a central cartridge receiving chamber being pressed against said flange by a closure piece 8 carrying a striker 10. A case 11 comprises a central pin 12 which actuates the striker pin 10 when the bottom 14 of the case is struck with the hand. The Specification, as open to inspection under Sect. 91, comprises projectiles having annular grooves 17, 21 to assist the shearing off of the flange 6, the modification in Fig. 4 (Cancelled) having a front guide surface 19 which is sheared off as the bolt penetrates and pressed against the rear guide surface 20. This subject-matter does not appear in the Specification as accepted.
