Abstract

706,463. Gun for firing bolts and the like. BOSSONG-WERK GES. June 30, 1952 [Nov: 21, 1951], No. 16441/52. Class 119 A gun for firing bolts, rivets, and the like into a solid mass is in two parts 1, 31, one containing the bolt 23 or the like and the cartridge 17 and the other part containing the firing pin 41 and its releasing mechanism, the first part having a cylindrical extension, such as a bolt 25, which fits into a bore of the second part and being secured in place by a releasable locking device. Further a guide 32 is provided, for connecting the two parts in such manner as to permit them to be separated from one another to a limited extent. In the construction shown, the bolt 25 is secured by a pin 26 to a downwardly projecting eye 24 of the part 1, which part has a sleeve 2 in which the barrel 3 can move against the action of a spring 5. The barrel has at one end a sound-absorbing device 9 and at the other end a cartridge holder 16. The bolt 23 is held in place by two or more spring-urged clamping members 19. The cylindrical extension 25 extends into the bore 30 of the part 31 to which the handle 39 is screwed, and is releasably held in place by a hook 48 which is formed on a locking ring 47 and which engages in a groove 28 formed near the rear end of the extension. In order to release the two parts 1, 31, the hook 48 is moved clear of the groove 28 and the parts are then moved apart. During such movement a cross pin 27 on extension 25 is guided in a guide slot 32 in the part 31, the slot terminating in a circumferential part 33 which limits the extent of separation. Once the separation has been effected, the part 1 can be swung about the bolt 25 and re-loading can be effected. During the separating movement a spring- pressed pawl 67, Fig. 3, on the part 31, by engaging in a recess 60 in a plate 58, guided for sliding movement on the barrel, causes the plate to move relatively to the barrel and thus by its part 61 to eject the spent cartridge case. A rib 63 on the barrel assists in guiding the plate and also serves, by its front sloping face 65, to lift the pawl clear of the recess 60 after ejection. The firing pin can be retracted by a handle 45 against the action of a spring 43, and is released for firing by a trigger 56 associated with sear 50. In use, the barrel is pressed against the object into which the bolt is to be fired, such action serving to compress the spring 5 and to move the cartridge holder 16 rearwardly until it abuts against a guide 36 for the firing pin. When firing into soft materials the bolt may pass through a ring placed in a recess 8, the ring being held in position by magnetizing the barrel.
