Abstract

1,093,629. Cartridge-actuated tools; long arm reachers. AMP Inc. Oct. 27, 1965 [Oct. 29' 1964], No. 45397/65. Headings B4C and B4W. [Also in Divisions F3 and H2] A power tool as described in Specifications 1,030,059 and 1,030,060 employing a propellant cartridge, described in Specification 970,466, comprises a tool ram slidable in a barrel which is threadedly received in a frame, a breech member having a combustion chamber which houses the cartridge and a cover sleeve coupled to the barrel by a collar, and a cartridge extractor and breech cap. The present invention provides the tool with a bevel gear arrangement at the end of the cover sleeve 43 so that an insulating stick (not shown) may be attached to the gearing shaft 17 to enable the tool to be operated at a distance. The collar 39, Fig. 12 (not shown), between the breech member 40 and the barrel 38, may have bevelled surfaces 73 which abut corresponding surfaces on the barrel so that, in the event of the flange 69 fracturing when the tool is fired, the ram will jam in the barrel. The tool is actuated by striking the end 53 with a hammer mounted on an insulating stick. Long arm reachers comprising clamps mounted on the top of insulating sticks 2 are used throughout the operation of connecting tap line TL to energized high-voltage line HVL by means of receptacle 5 and wedge 11. Initially the lines are temporarily joined by clamp 1 which, with the tap line secured in first jaws, is raised on insulating stick 2 to hook over the HVL and, by rotating stick 2 about its longitudinal axis, the thread 3 advanced to clamp the second jaws of clamp lover the HVL. The stick 2 is disengaged by pulling along its axis and then has a second clamp 4, Figs. 1 and 2 (not shown), in which the receptacle 5 is held, affixed to it, and which is then raised so that, as shown, receptacle 5 surrounds the lines. The wedge 11, releasably held in a third clamp 9, Fig. 3 (not shown), is inserted between the bights of the receptacle 5 to trap the lines and is knocked partially home by a hammer 12 mounted on a long insulating handle 2. The wedge is finally driven home by a cartridge operated power tool (see above and Division F3), held by a long insulating stick, which is secured in position over the wedge and receptacle by rotating the insulating stick about its longitudinal axis and which is actuated by a sharp blow with longhandled hammer 12.
