A gas-tight device for causing a powder to pass from a first gaseous medium A into a second gaseous medium B, the two media being at different pressures, is of the kind in which the powder is conveyed by a screw conveyer 3 along a substantially vertical conduit 2 connecting the two media so as tu form in and towards the outlet of said conduit a gas-tight plug 4 by compressing said powder, the forward end surface of the plug being engaged by scraping means 5 for scraping the forward end surface of the plug to reconvert said plug into powder and is characterised in that said scraping means are associated with a pan 5 provided below the outlet of said conduit for retaining the reconverted powder around the outer portion of the plug to aid the gas-tight qualities of the latter. Fig. ]. The spent carbide of an acetylene generator falls through the perforations of drum 1 and is conveyed by the screw 10 thereon so that it falls into conduit 2, being compressed by screw 3 to form gas-tight plug 4, which plug is scraped by the inner surface of pan 5 rotating with screw 3 and the resultant powder is caused by fixed scraper 6 to fall into container (or endless belt) 7. Alternatively, the pan 5 may be stationary and the scraping of the plug effected by a second screw fixed on the shaft of screw 3, each second screw being oppositely threaded.
