Abstract

1510065 Pneumatic separating BROWN & WILLIAMSON TOBACCO CORP 13 Sept 1976 [20 Oct 1975] 37842/76 Heading B2H An apparatus for separating sand from botanical fines e.g. tobacco, comprises a chamber 10 having therein a pair of horizontal air - permeable members 50 and 50', a plurality of particles in a close packed array between the members 50 and 50', means for adjusting the position of the members 50 and 50' to vary the volume therebetween and thus alter the packing of the particles in the array, means for vibrating the particles and means for creating a flow of air up through the array. The mixture of sand and tobacco is introduced into the chamber 10 by a screw conveyor 14 and the chamber vibrated by a device 86. The sand passes downwardly through the array of particles and is discharged through a spout 18. The tobacco is entrained by the air flow and is removed therefrom by a cyclone 32. Each air - permeable member 50, 50' comprises a screen 52, 52' having a peripheral ring 54, 54' welded thereto. Flanges 58, 58' on the rings are clamped between flanges on the walls of the chamber by members 66 which extend around the chamber. One end of each member 66 is connected to its other end by a bolt (80) and nut (82) which enables the length of each member 66 and thus the position of the members 50 and 50' to be adjusted.
