Abstract

1390686 Fluidized-bed separation BRITISHAMERICAN TOBACCO CO Ltd 21 Dec 1972 [21 March 1972] 59005/72 Heading B2H A process for separating sand from botanical material, e.g. tobacco or tea, comprises feeding a mixture of the sand and botanical material to a fluidized-bed column 1 above a support 14, providing a flow of gas, e.g. air, upwardly through the column, conveying the botanical portion of the mixture through the upper portion of the column, and causing the sand to filter to the bottom of the column through the support. The mixture is fed to the column 1 from a hopper 3 via a chute 5, which may be vibratory and may contain a screen 6 for preliminary separation, a hopper 4 and a screw conveyor 2. The column 1 is provided with flexible supports 10, 11 and means 12 for vibrating it. The support 14 includes two wire mesh screens 15, 16 between which are closely packed particles in the form of spherical bodies, which may be made of steel, glass, ceramic or thermo-setting resin. The mixture is maintained in a fluidized state in section 13 of the column by blowing air upwardly through the support 14 or, as shown, by sucking it through by means of a vacuum pump associated with a cyclone separator 31 in which the botanical material entrained with the air is separated therefrom. A control means 21 actuates valves 22, 23 to maintain a steady air flow and, at desired intervals, to superimpose a pulsed flow. The sand which passes through the support 14 is collected in a receptacle 17. A baffle (40), Fig. 2 (not shown), may be provided in the upwardly tapering portion of the column to control air flow and prevent clogging.
