Abstract
670,769. Reducing iron and other metallic ores. RUMMEL, R. Dec. 20, 1949 [Dec. 31, 1948]. No. 32665/49. Class 72 and 82(i) In a process for the reduction of metallic ores, in which a solid fuel, the ash of which forms a liquid slag, is subjected in its own slag to destructive distillation and treatment with an exothermic gasifying agent, a part only of the fuel being reacted with the gasifying agent, the ore is introduced into the liquid slag and reduced by the remainder of the fuel, the liquid slag being maintained in undulatory and circulatory movement by the flow energy of the gasifying agents. As shown, a fluid slag body 2a is subjected to an exothermic gasifying agent, e.g. air, oxygen or oxygen enriched air, blown in through nozzles 4, which agent by burning the combustible material in the slag heats the slag which passes through a conduit 12 into the bottom of a second body of slag 2b. There is introduced into the bottom of the upwardly moving body 2b coal and iron ore by a conveyer 3 and also an endothermically reacting gas e.g. steam or carbon dioxide. The iron ore is reduced, the slag, carrying fuel and reduced ore, passes through a conduit 13 into the body 2a of slag and the iron is deposited in a pocket 14a. Part of the slag may be removed continuously or intermittently. The slag may be given a circular movement in a vertical plane, Fig. 1, (not shown), or a horizontal plane, Fig. 8, (not shown) in a single vessel or two vessels, may be used in which the exothermic reaction takes place in upwardly moving slag in one vessel and the endothermic reaction in downwardly moving slag in the other, Fig. 6, (not shown). The two reaction spaces may be separated by a wall ending below the liquid level, the slag passing beneath the wall. The walls'of the vessel may be tubes carrying water which may be converted into steam which may be superheated. The gases from the reactions in the slag bodies may be collected separately. Specification 666,119, [Group XII], is referred to.
