582,055. Water gas plant. ARNOLD, M. H. M., PRYDE, D. R., MORLEY, R. J., and IMPERIAL CHEMICAL INDUSTRIES, Ltd. June 2, 1944, No. 10603. [Class 55 (i)] Carbon monoxidecontaining gases are produced from powdered carbonaceous material by treatment with gases at such a velocity as to maintain the particles in fluid state without causing their entrainment in the gases withdrawn; blow and make stages are effected in separate vessels. Coal in fluid condition may be initially carbonized in a retort or in the upper part of the blow vessel. In a three stage continuous process powdered coal is carbonized in a retort 3 whilst maintained in fluid state by passage through it of retort gases at a rate of 10 cubic metres per hour, the carbonized particles at 800‹C. leaving through a pipe 8 and injected with an air stream at 500‹C. through a pipe 10 into a blow vessel 9 in which they are raised to incandescence. Blow gases escape through a pipe 12 from a storage vessel 11 into which the material overflows. A portion returns to the retort supplying heat for the carbonization and another flows into a "make" vessel 15 supplied with steam at 500‹C. through a pipe 16. Water gas is delivered through pipe 17 and residual solid material conveyed by an air stream back to the blow vessel.
