Abstract
<PICT:0425611/III/1> Active carbon is obtained by injecting a mixture of powdered carbonaceous material and compressed air or steam through a pipe n in an upward direction into an upper chamber a of a retort constituting a combustion zone from which the products pass downwardly to a portion b of reduced diameter, constituting the activating zone, and thence to an outlet pipe v dipping into water in a tank c. The carbonaceous material, e.g. coal dust, passes from a container f through a valve g and is fed to the pipe n by steam or compressed air supplied through a pipe k and injector. Coarse particles fall through a pipe l which serves as an additional air inlet. Gas for starting is supplied through a pipe m. A trickle of water may be supplied to the combustion zone through a valved pipe p. The outlet pipe v preferably has a very short dip. The slurry of active carbon is drawn off from the tank c, washed with alkali or acid, and dried. Specification 310,908, [Class 90], is referred to.
