Abstract

670,124. Travelling-wave tubes. PHILIPS ELECTRICAL, Ltd. Sept. 6, 1949 [Sept. 9, 1948], No. 23028/49. Class 39 (i). In a travelling-wave tube, the electron beam is flat, travelling radially outwards from a cylindrical cathode 2 surrounded by one or more grid electrodes 3, 4 and interacting with waves which travel along a transmission line, at least one limb of which is a spiral coaxial with the cathode and the beam. The spiral fulfils the condition r n =r 1 exp. (na/r 1 ), a being the initial pitch, r 1 the initial radius and r n the radius of the nth turn. As shown, the transmission line comprises a pair of strips 5 shaped as logarithmic spirals and the anode comprises two narrow strips 6 with a screen 8 behind. In a modification, one of the spiral strips is replaced by a flat conductive plate normal to the axis of the spiral.
