670,004. Pit props. DOLLERY & PALMER (PNEUMATIC TOOLS). Ltd. Dec. 1. 1948 [Dec. 22, 1947], No. 31126/48. Class 20(ii) A pit prop comprises a longitudinally slotted tubular part 8, sliding in and adapted to be clamped against a tubular part 1 by two or more jaws 7 which are pressed against the inside wall of the slotted part by a tightening wedge 5 when a transverse wedge 4 is driven through two openings in the prop part 1 and bears against the wedge 5 and against an abutment 10 fixed to the part 1. The pressure of the wedge 5 is transmitted to the jaws 7 by wedges 6. A supporting member 3 carried by the part 1 supports the jaws 7 by a spring 12, and the wedge 5 may be released by a spring or wedge bearing against this support 3. The upper part 8 may be pressed against a band 9 through friction linings 2, the part 1 having springs to allow this. The band 9 is freely supported by pieces 11 welded to the lower part 1 and is held in position by the wedge 4. An eccentric pivoted to the upper part may be provided to effect mechanical release of the part 8. Between the head plate 15 and the upper part 8 is a ball joint 16.
