[Also in Group XL (b)] In an image iconoscope the area 3 on the target electrode which is occupied by the electron image from the photo-cathode 2 is restricted to less than the area which is scanned by the electron beam by means of a mark 6 positioned in the optical system between the object lens 1 and the photo-cathode. With this arrangement a signal corresponding to the true " black " level is produced when the electron beam scans the area not occupied by the electron image and the picture signal may be " clamped " to this signal by known means. The marking may be effected by positioning a suitably-apertured metal plate immediately adjacent the window of the tube or by placing an equivalent mark at an intermediate point in the optical system. The size of the mark may be adjustable.
