Abstract

667,962. Vapour engines. MATTOS, S. M. M. DE. Oct. 11, 1948. [Oct. 10, 1947] No. 26449/48. Class 122(iii). [Also in Group XIII] A working fluid such as CO 2 is vaporized in a boiler 1 heated by the circulation of a fluid, e.g. water at room temperature, through a pipe 5, or by the combustion of a fuel, and the vapour passes through a superheater 2 and pipe 7 to drive a reciprocating engine 11 or a turbine. The exhaust vapour passes by a pipe 18 and oil trap 48 to tubes 19 immersed in liquid CO 2 in a casing 20 forming a condenser. Liquid CO 2 condensed in the tubes 19 passes through a pipe 22 and is forced by a pump 23 and pipe 24 back to the boiler 1. A branch pipe 35 supplies liquid CO 2 from the pipe 24 to the casing 20 of the condenser from which CO 2 vapour passes through a pipe 28 to a pump 29 which returns it to the boiler 1 through an oil trap 49 and pipe 30. Heating fluid, e.g. water is supplied to the superheater 2 through a pipe 6 and passes through a valved pipe 9 to the boiler heating pipe 5. On starting the apparatus liquid CO 2 is charged into the boiler through a pipe 3 and into the condenser casing 20 through a pipe 34, or by a connection from the boiler, so as to cover the tubes 19. The pumps 29 and 23 may be driven from the engine 11 or separately by the vapour from the boiler.
