Abstract

667,373. Spring frames for motor-cycles. BROCKHOUSE & CO., Ltd., J. Dec. 6, 1949 [Dec. 6, 1948], No. 31480/48. Class 136(iii) In a motor - cycle comprising a power unit, load supporting means and a spring suspension between the front and rear wheels, the spring suspension comprises a pair of bar springs 17 extending longitudinally of the vehicle in laterally spaced relationship and connected to the front and rear wheels, means connecting the two springs rigidly together intermediate their extremities, and means for connecting the dead load, including the power unit 11, and the load-carrying means to the two springs centrally of their length. The springs 17 are connected by brackets 16 on a frame member 12. The rear axle is suspended by links 20 to the springs 17 and by links 21 to the frame. The front ends of the springs 17 are connected by links 24 to trunnions 25 formed on a collar 26 which is slidably mounted on the steering column 28. An upwardly extending frame member 13 is connected by links 33, 34 to the lower end of the column 28. Steering movement is transmitted to a steering fork 45 by an arm 53 carried on the column 28. A tube 43 is rigidly connected to the fork 45 and slides on a spigot 54 carried by the arm 53. The motor-cycle is provided with a sheet metal housing 60 comprising a front part 62 connected to the frame member 13 and a rear part 61 hinged at 65 to the part 62 to allow access to the power unit 11. The underside of the rear housing 62 rests on a bearing washer 59 carried by a strut 56 which is mounted on the rear end of the frame. The driver's seat 68 is hingedly mounted above the washer 59 and may be swung upwardly to expose the filler cap 70 of the fuel tank 57 which is supported by the strut 56. A locker space 73 having a hinged lid 74 is provided in the housing behind the seat.
