Abstract

667,095. Toothed gearing. JONES & CO. (ENGINEERS), Ltd., W. Jan. 3, 1950 [Jan. 31, 1949], No. 2648/49. Class 80 (i). A device for producing non - uniform rotation of the cams operating switches in an electric circuit, and the like, consists of a spur gear 1 having teeth on its whole periphery freely mounted on a shaft 2. Concentric with and longitudinally aligned with the spur gear 1 is an internally toothed wheel 3, also freely mounted on the shaft 2. In the annular gap between the toothed wheels 1, 3 and engaging with both is a pinion 4, from which one or more of the teeth have been removed as at 7, leaving at least two teeth between any two removed teeth. The internally toothed wheel 3 has teeth on a short arc 8 of its periphery (or several such arcs) so that these groups of teeth correspond to those remaining on the pinion. The blank part 9 of the inner surface of the internally toothed wheel 3 is of such a diameter that it will just touch the corners of two pinion teeth adjacent to a cut away tooth 7 on the pinion 4 thus preventing the rotation of the pinion on its own axis save when engaged with the teeth cut in the internally toothed wheel. A constant relative angular velocity between the spur gear 1 and the internally toothed wheel 3 causes the axis of the pinion 4 to move with an interrupted motion about the shaft 2, sometimes with the angular velocity of the spur gear and at other times, when the teeth of the pinion engage with the teeth 8, with a velocity dependent upon the relative velocity between the spur gear 1 and the wheel 3. This motion of the axis of the pinion 4 can be imparted to a cam 5 mounted concentric with the device by means of a pin 6 on which the pinion is freely mounted. The reaction member of the device may be either the internally toothed wheel 3 or the spur gear 1. The non-uniform rotation of the pin 6 can also be used to drive the internally toothed wheel or the spur wheel of another similar mechanism mounted coaxially with the first on the shaft 2. In modifications of the device, either or both of the geared wheels 1 and 3 may have teeth on parts only of their peripheries.
