Abstract
666,978. Rolling. RENDLEMAN, N. Aug. 17, 1948 [Feb. 3, 1948], No. 21697/48. Class 83 (iv). A rod mill having a succession of roughing roll stands has means for separately driving the first two of said stands independently of all the others, means for driving all of the others together, said first two stands being adjustable as to speed and roll pass section to compensate for variations in the initial cross-sections of the billets, the respective pass areas of each of the succeeding stands of the train and relative speeds thereof being substantially fixed. The roughing train is followed by an intermediate train of a succession of pairs of stands 9-10, 11-12, 13-14, 15-16 with loops between successive pairs, and a finishing train of a succession of stands 17-22 driven through gearing by a motor M<7>. A shear may be interposed between the roughing train and the intermediate train. Figs. 6A and 6B, together show in diagrammatic form the roll stand combinations for the entire range of rod sizes up to <21>/32 inch. Figs. 8-9 and 10-11 (not shown), indicate the manner in which the stands are arranged for larger bar sizes in the ranges <11>/16-<7>/8 inch and <15>/16-1<1>/4 inch respectively. In a mill having three working lines A, B and C, Fig. 7, since the passes in the roughing train are never changed and 2 inch x 2 inch, 2“ inch x 2“ inch and 2¢ inch x 2¢ inch cross-section billets are all rolled through the same passes, the rolls of each stand are provided with a number of like passes. Thus, when new grooves are needed the rolls are shifted laterally to the working line, and since all passes on any line will wear at about the same rate, rolls do not have to be discarded until all the passes are worn down.
