A rolling mill comprises three groups I, III, V, Fig. 1, of horizontal roll stands with a vertical roll stand II-V or IV-V between the groups, at least one of the vertical stands IV-V being selectively driven from either a high-power motor 31, Fig. 2, through a reduction gear for reducing operations or from a lowpower motor 32 for edging operations. The mill may be readily adapted for rolling rod, strip, angles, &c., of different dimensions. Billets heated in a furnace 11 are fed to the stand some of which may be idle according to the type of work being rolled. After passing a shear S the work reaches further horizontal and vertical stands VI-V, VIII-V and may be led off through a guide 15. Alternatively, the work may be fed through looping guides 13, 16, 19, 20 to further finishing stands XI-XII or if unsuitable for looping may be fed on to reversing tables 14 or 17. Different types of work may alternatively be led off to reels 12 from the finishing stand XII or directly from the stand X or it may be fed from the stand X along a runout table 18 leading to a cooling bed.
