A rolling mill plant for rolling wide strip from ingots has a desurfacing machine 6 and slab shears 7 situated parallel to the rolling line 1, a slab to be rolled passing an edging stand 2, a horizontal stand 3, and then being shifted by a transverse drag 4 across a bed 5 for desurfacing and shearing at 6 and 7. The work is then shifted across a second bed 9 to the line 1, where it is rolled in the stands 2 and 3 to an unfinished sheet, the sheet finally being rolled in a finishing train 11.
