Abstract

Products for use in the conversion of hides and skins to leather (see Group VIII) are prepared by condensing one or more aldehydes with one or more ketones. Examples describe the condensation of paraformaldehyde with acetone, methyl ethyl ketone, or methyl propyl ketone; acetaldehyde with acetone or methyl ethyl ketone; crotonaldehyde (with or without acetaldehyde or aqueous formaldehyde) with acetone; acetaldehyde and aqueous formaldehyde with acetone and methyl ethyl ketone; acetaldehyde, aqueous formaldehyde and crotonaldehyde with acetone and methyl ethyl ketone; and aqueous formaldehyde with acetone and methyl ethyl ketone. Condensation takes place in the presence of sodium carbonate or methyl alcoholic potash, either by refluxing or on ice, and the solution is neutralized and distilled to remove excess ketone, yielding water-soluble products which form water-insoluble liquid or solid resins on warming with alkali.
