Abstract

Condensation products are prepared by condensing a lower saturated aldehyde with a polymeric compound containing reactive hydrogen at a carbon atom attached to an aldehyde or ketone group and obtainable according to the process of Specification 489,330. The reaction is effected in aqueous solution at a temperature between boiling point of the mixture and room temperature and, if desired, in the presence of a catalyst known to accelerate aldol condensation such as potassium or sodium hydroxide or carbonate, p trimethyl- or triethylamine, or tetramethylammonium hydroxide. Suitable aldehydes are formaldehyde, acetaldehyde, propionaldehyde, derivatives thereof or substances which under reaction conditions give rise to them. The polymeric compounds are obtained by condensing a mono-olefinic aldehyde or ketone with a polymeric body containing hydroxyl. In examples: (1) a condensation product of polyvinyl alcohol and vinylmethyl ketone is condensed with formaldehyde or acetaldehyde; (3) a condensation product of methylcellulose and vinylmethyl ketone is condensed with formaldehyde.
