Relates to cloth laying machines in which cloth is laid by a reciprocating carriage on a table having clamping devices for retaining the layers in position. The cloth a during laying passes between the nip of two inclined levers or plates C of L-shaped cross-section extending between and pivoted on brackets C<SP>1</SP> mounted at each side of the carriage; adjusting screws c pass through the shorter legs of plates C and engage brackets C<SP>1</SP> to vary the drag applied to the cloth during laying; and cam levers f are pivoted to brackets C' to project forwardly and rearwardly of the carriage, the forwardly-projecting levers lifting the clamping device at one end of the table B to allow the cloth to be laid thereunder and the rearwardly-projecting levers similarly lifting the clamping device at the other end of the table on the reverse travel of the carriage. As the carriage approaches the end of its travel, a cam lever f engages a roller d' on each arm d; beam D rises, as rollers d<SP>7</SP> ride up the levers f, and lifts the foremost plate C about its pivots c<SP>2</SP> to allow a fold to be made on reversal.
