[Also in Group VIII] Cylinder machines; winding webs. -In a strip-marking machine the strip passes over a freely rotatable impression cylinder mounted on a support vertically rocked by a cam, the forward movement of the type face on a reciprocating printing head is tangential to the strip on the raised cylinder, a shoe on the printing head frictionally rotates the cylinder at a corresponding surface speed during head advance, and the printed strip is rewound onto a roll driven e.g. frictionally by the cam shaft. The machine shown is similar to that described in Specification 660,332, except that the tape is drawn from a roll 6 mounted on a pin 5, and after printing is rewound on a roll 52 surrounding a tubular core on a shaft 50 constantly rotated through a belt or sprocket chain 53 from the driving shaft 18 which is rotated through reduction gearing by an electro-motor (not shown) ; the roll 52 and core are frictionally gripped between a flange 56 and an adjustably spring-loaded flange 57. The roll 39 for transferring the ink from the pad 48 to the faces of the type elements 10 instead of being on a fixed pin is mounted on the rocking support 23 which has a roll 26 to contact the cam 25 whereby it is rocked about its pivot 24; the pad is supplied from an ink reservoir 44 via a roll 42 (driven either by pawl and ratchet from the lever 14 or by a belt or sprocket chain from the shaft 18), a messenger roll 41 mounted on the rocking support 23, and a roll 40 on a fixed stud 40a. A carrier 30 is slidable into guideways 32 in the printing head so that the enlarged heads of type elements 10 carried in openings 33 therein are held down by the surface 87, Fig. 4. An exchangeable shoe 29 screwed to the carrier 30 drives the impression cylinder 8 when the latter is in raised position. The machine is particularly intended for printing label markings on Scotch tape, and in a modification two or three such tapes, of different widths and colours, may be fed from separate rolls 6 to the impression cylinder 8 where they adhere to each other and after printing are rewound as a single laminated tape.
