679,620. Printing. BATES, E. B. Feb. 20, 1950 [Feb. 21, 1949], No. 4694/49. Classes 100 (ii) and 100 (iv). [Also in Group XIX] Printing fabrics; rotary machines; ink-ribbon mechanism.-In a web marking machine a hollow web - engaging roller or wheel has, mounted to rotate with it, an electric iron having means to project it to an operative position at the roller periphery and to retract it therefrom and a marking ribbon supply and take-up means with intermediate guides to present the ribbon for pressing against the web, e.g. by relief portions in the required pattern on the face of the iron. As shown in Fig. 4 the knitted fabric or other web 1 is fed over a table 2 and between a roller 3 and a marking drum 4 connected by chain gearing and driven by a handle on the drum shaft 7, or by an electric motor or line shafting; an eccentric 30 and a cam 47 on a sleeve 51 respectively oscillate the resistanceheated iron 26 (through a ring 28) and drive the ribbon feed roller 41 (through an adjustable-stroke lever 46, spring-loaded chain 44 and free-wheel 42), the sleeve 51 being either stationary, for marking at each revolution of the drum 4, or driven through a reduction gear (e.g. chain gearing) from the drum 4, for marking at regularly spaced rotations thereof; the ribbon 33 is drawn from a supply spool 32, passes over an apertured metal spring plate 35, and is wound onto a spool 34 mounted in arms 74 pivoted on the sleeve 51, spring-loaded at 75 to press the spool against the roller 41, and retractable by manually actuated cams 76 for spool replacement. Number-printing apparatus.-The marking applied may include length figures, the iron then having figure wheels 61, 62, Fig. 7, steadied by spring detents 69, 70 and rotated step-by-step by a double spring-loaded stationary plunger-pawl engaged by the ratchet wheels 64, 65 each time the iron is retracted. Bronzing &c.-The ribbon 33 may be of paper. coated successively with wax, metal powder, and rubber, gutta percha or other thermoplastic adhesive.
