Abstract

A labelling machine, e.g. for textiles comprises a carrier 2, mounted with a tape supply roll 6, and movable between two units, whereupon at a first unit 3 the tape is printed on, and at a second unit 4 a printed tape portion 73 is cut off and heat sealed to an article. In operation tape 71 is fed past a roller 24 by superimposed feed rolls 26, 27, located in an aperture in a guide passage 25, so projecting a portion 72 of the tape 71 into the printing unit 3 at the first carrier position. The printing unit 3 comprises an inked ribbon 33 and an adjustable printing wheel 32, set by a lever (36), Fig. 3 (not shown), or automatically. A shaft 5 (see also Fig. 4), driven by an electric motor or electromagnets, carries a disc 51 with a belt 52 fixed to an abutment 53 at one end and at the other end to an arm 28 of the feed roller 27, which has a free wheel mechanism (not shown). Rotation of the shaft 5 effects both the projection of the tape portion 72 by its action, via the disc 51, and belt 52 on the feed roller 27 and also the rotation, through 45 degrees, of the carrier 2 between its first and second positions. Starting in the Fig. 1 position, i.e. with the tape portion 72 already projecting into the printing unit 3, clockwise rotation (when viewed downwardly) of the disc 51 causes the carrier to swivel to the second unit 4. During this operation the feed roller 27 free wheels so that no more tape is projected. The second unit 4 comprises reciprocating stamps 41, 42, the stamp 41 being heated, and having a knife edge 43 which coacts with a resiliently mounted lower knife edge 44. The marked portion of the tape is now cut off and heat sealed to the required article. Movement of the carrier 2 back to its first position causes a further tape portion 72 to be projected for continuation of the process.
