1388478 Labelling machines USS ENG & CONSULTANS Inc 18 Feb 1972 [22 Feb 1971] 7690/72 Heading B8F Labelling apparatus comprises a frame 18, a supply reel 36 on the frame for storing a carrier strip bearing pressure-sensitive adhesive labels 12, a take-up reel 38 on the frame for storing the carrier strip when spent, a peeling edge 60 about which the strip is advanced to peel the labels therefrom, printing means including a printing roll 84 and a back-up roll 74, and a roller 40 for rolling the printed peeled labels on to an elongate member 16, the roller 40 and take-up reel being engageable with the elongate member to effect rotation of the take-up reel and thus advancement of the strip. The printing roll is mounted on a frame 86 pivotally fixed by a pin 33 to a pair of side plates 20a and 20b of the frame 18 and is driven by the back-roll on rotation of the latter by the carrier strip, the back-up roll being mounted between the plates 20a and 20b by a stud 22 and nut 26 releasably-retaining the plates together. The printing roll is urged against the back-up roll with a predetermined pressure by a pivoted handle 110 carrying an adjustable spring-loaded pin 118, which bears against the printing roll frame. Stop surfaces or lugs 120, 124 or 144, 146, Figs. 11 and 12 (not shown), are provided to limit the pressure applying movement of the handle. The printing roll has three sets of three peripherally-arranged grooves holding force-fitted rubber type members, each set extending circumferentially a distance equal to a label length so that three rows of indicia are always printed on a label. The printing roll is inked by an eccentricallymounted inking roll 136, Fig. 8 (not shown). A spring-loaded, pressure applying unit 62 Figs. 4 and 10 (not shown), similar to the pin 118 referred to above, is fitted to either the frame or the supply reel to brake the latter.
