Abstract

A fuel oil composition comprises a heavy fuel oil which has a viscosity at 100 DEG F. of at least 450 seconds Redwood I, and which contains solid carbonaceous matter, and 0.1 to 0.5 per cent by weight of one or more pure or commercially pure oil-soluble homologues of phenol, which may carry one or more substituents. Phenols specified are cresols, nitrocresols, chlorocresols, cresotinic acid, xylenols, nitroxylenols, chloroxylinols, carvacrol and thymol; tricresol is particularly mentioned. Difficulties due to the presence of solid matter in the oil are reduced by the addition of the phenol. Specification 470,072 is referred to. Reference has been directed by the Comptroller to Specification 576,089.
