Abstract
Zinc chelates are made by refluxing for 30 minutes to 4 hours, under substantially anhydrous conditions, zinc carbonate and a b -diketone of the formula <FORM:0999234/C2/1> where R is an alkyl group of 1-3 carbon atoms or a phenyl group. If desired an alcohol or benzene may be used as a non-aqueous dispersant. Up to 50 p.p.m. of water can be tolerated in the reaction system and this and the small amount of water formed during the reaction may be removed as an azeotrope. Excess of the diketone may be employed as a solvent or dispersant and can be recycled. Examples describe the preparation of zinc acetylacetonate and zinc 1,3-diphenyl-1,3-propanedionate.
